It gets worse : now a person who decided to fight unpaid for the fighters who get paid got fought by the people who dont get paid to fight and now the people who do get paid to fight but are not being paid to fight this fight are fighting the person who tried to fight for them : for free.

Obviously, the sound economic model would be that only those professionals who are paid to fight should be allowed to fight : for too long amateurs have been allowed to fight and we see the sorry consequences of this foolish policy : unpaid mercenaries forced to eek out an existence on small rations while others do their job for free!
Maybe the mercenaries should unionize? Too radical? Okay, form a proper business-like guild and seek restrictions on non-members participating in fights or battles : look to the Tavern Wenches, see what happens to any hussy offering her charms for free in Avonmora!
Bugger the other developments, the admin team should look to resolving this issue forthwith!

Truth be told, Ayes are in a position that is highly immune to any real damage.
MERC are quickly on that path as well.
The lessons learned about ship worth and power have been great experience for players on both sides.
