They got him to defleet completely, without needing to use any voodoo. So they made him take a pretty big loss without taking any themselves. And since the point of the whole thing was to hurt him, that did a pretty good job.

Now granted if he HADN"T defleeted then the attack would have happened as advertised, they would have spent voodoo, but would have made profit off the attacks. So no matter what they were going to cause damage-one way or another.

Now odds are he probably HOPED he wouldn't defleet, and he could light him up, get some ships and gold and everyone could hit him, but even though he defleeted himself that still was a loss for him-only get about 70% of your ships value selling them usually, so in the end he still took some losses.
