It happens in real life more often than one would think: set the controls to fail. And then fail indeed.
In the worst cases is called "depression", but there are many shades and the simpler could be "it's too high to win, I'll lose instead. See? I lost. I was right, it was too high".
Must be said also that its opposite, the "it's a challenge and I will face it", is much more difficult.
