Noob/Newb vs Experienced Players

Purpose of this discussion is to discuss the point when a New(er) Player is no longer a Noob/Newb, or basically when is someone an experienced player. I constantly hear the argument of hitting "newer" players, as in hitting noobs/newbs. "Newer" is a relative term. There are players that are newer than me, but that doesn't mean they are noobs/newbs. When discussing inexperienced (noob/newb) players, the term newer should be refrained from using to describe them.

Just so everyone is on the same page, a baseline definition of a Noob/Newb is needed. I think that we can agree that the below is a very basic definition.

Noob or Newb - a player that is new to the game that lacks knowledge and experience in gameplay and game mechanics.

This is pretty basic. Now we can get to the actual point of this discussion. Everyone in this game lacks knowledge and experience in some aspects of the game. No one knows everything. So clearly there is a point that a player has reached to no longer be a newb. What are the defining limits of someone being a noob/newb?

As a note, there is no single defining point for being a newb beyond the 1000 turns spent. So please state more than Player ID; while Player ID is a good indicator of who could be a newb, a high ID doesn't mean they are still a newb.

I tend to base it on fleets, fleet set ups and willingness to listen.

Well 1 determining factor for me is if they decide to atttack a fleet of mine, then I consider them no longer under the new/noob/newb umbrella.

Outside of that, I look at fleets and fleet setup as dman stated.

I'm relatively the same. Things I look at.

Ship Count (50+ ships generally)

Ships of the Line

LMM Fleets w/ tail

Multiple Mid-High Level War Fleets (Brigs and up)

Completion of Marquess Nation Mission

War Fleets consistently on the plunder board.

depends on if it is bad attack, setup of their fleet if they attack you

example: newbie attacking one of my fleets with howkers

I think he means being hit with voodoo to be attacked, not just on the plunder board already or a skirmish.

Correct.

Interesting topic...

I want to take it a step further and talk about an "experienced" player who is good at one thing, but is a "noob" at another.

I will pick on PHX for this example as almost all should know his name.

PHX since the day I join has been at the top of most lists. Influence, Fame, Trade, Port Control... The guy has been around, he is loaded with a ton of gold. All of his hideout and techs are maxed. Some would argue, that he is one of the most "experienced" players in the game.

On the other hand, PHX is a "NOOB" when it comes to battle mechanics. Now I 100% respect PHX and I think he would actually agree with what I am saying. He knows very little about fleet battles/mechanics. He makes noob errors in this area. This is only due to the fact that he never had to learn the life of a pirate or privateer. In speaking with him and the history of Avonmora I found this out.

One reason why I think everyone should experience all aspects of game play. Don't pigeon hole yourself to just a trader or just a pirate. Do more, experience more. Only then can you fully understand all sides of the game and make it work to your advantage. Ask questions.

Now, I don't know all aspects of this game and don't claim that. But I truly believe that I know more then most. I believe VUDU members know more then most as we discuss almost all topics of the game. Tis why I started the guild to begin with.

I do not hit back at players who are obviously inexperienced. In fact, I usually message them with hints and tips. I can think of two specific examples of this recently. Someone fairly new, at least in terms of time in game, hit me on plunder board. I usually let it slide being thankful for the danger being removed.

But one specifically i remember. I pulled a spy report because of what I saw on his fleet config. I contacted his guild leaders to give them a heads up as a "training opportunity" which was received well.

A week later I pulled another spy report on this particular player just to see if heeded the advice. He did and I contacted him wishing him well and offering help with any other questions.

I think this is the best way to teach new players the nuances of certain aspects of the game. Give them the opportunity to learn the right way and look for them on the seas later on down the road. That sort of guidance helps reinforce the great community PG has.................. It also softens the blow when you do raid them a month later
