Gold Bars further uses

I can see that the gold bars are starting to hit the market. This is the opportune moment to announce further uses of Gold Bars.

Ship Building: (Only for construction, upgrades will require 0).
-Large Merchantman will require 10 Gold Bars (per ship)
-Ship of the Line will require 100 Gold Bars (per ship)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Officers:

Captains:
x Gold Bar each where x = (Captains Hired/100) - 1
Rounded down, minimum 0
This translates to:
1 Gold bar each for Captains 200 to 299
2 Gold bars each for captains 300 to 399
3 Gold bars each for captains 400 to 499
and so on.

Same with Admirals and Merchants with this formula used:
x Gold Bar each where x = (Officers Hired/20) - 1

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you feel more/fewer gold bar metrics should be used, let us know. Generally, we feel that these are the least we can start with.
More ideas, feel free to add.

i am just curious why would someone need gold bars to make a ship i thought you wanted to make the game realistic

Ship building of finest ships is not unrealistic to require gold bars. There can be many reasons to justify this. While we are speaking for realism, lets underline that the game currency is gold coins. Gold Bars are not much different than gold coins as they are both made from the same substance; gold.

Make it so that the gold bar startup cost for LM's and SOL's don't kick in till a player has a certain number of ships already. Perhaps a total of 50 or 100 ships before the gold bar 'tax' is activated. Or maybe once a player has 5 of any particular ship then you could activate the gold bar 'tax' on that type of ship?

I like this idea a lot, but then, I sell gold bars.

All for a gold bar component in ship build costs, but perhaps a tweak on the coin cost to compensate somewhat ; then its just another 'material' you have to gather, like coins, turns, wood, tools and cotton.

yeah right....building 100 ships is like nothing for a good player...new or old....

Already right now ship building needs a lot of resources to be gathered before hand. When you think about the case of pirates like me, we buy ships a lot now and then, and usually sell them soon for strategic, safety and a lot of other purposes. When we sell we don't even get the resources that we used to build it. We just get the cost of the ship. So we can't endlessly gather those gold bars. It'll be a great loss. Regarding gold bars for officers, i think that's ok as its just a one time cost and cheap too. But gold bars for ships is extremely bad. It doesn't encourage changing tactics and lessens flexibility of the ships.

But a solution can be brought up to this idea. When selling ships, the resources used to construct that ship except gold bars, gets added up and then after selling they get returned in the form of wood and iron. Gold bars are returned as it is to the warehouse. If warehouse doesn't have enough space it is returned in the form of gold coins.

Good point right there, even if it wasn't for full value to refund the resources at least return some to offset this new added cost.

disagree : when you sell a ship you sell it at the price quoted 'as is' : which is the value of the coin invested : same if its a 37att or a 60att ship, it dont matter if you used EJ's, MC's or just plain commandeered it, or found it on a tidal wave : returning material used in construction is only logical if you are breaking up the ship..for parts.. in which case, it would be worth a lot less than a 'going concern' : so, lets not confuse the two separate concepts : you sell 'as is' or you break it for parts.. you cant mix the two.

I do agree some ships have a higher 'value' than the price the game will give you for it : as in high attributes, for example. That's something that needs to be addressed by allowing formal player-to-player sales, via auction or ship-brokers.

I think the solution is to tweak the coin price paid by the system on a ship sale to compensate (partly or fully) for the bars used (approx 300k gc worth for a sotl). As CJ said already, bar or coin.. its all gold.. so the price paid on system sales should reflect the increased construction cost.
