Just some ideas. We could play classic dice, card games, roulette, anything people want to bet on, maybe even ship races one day. Who can trade the most of a specific item, almost anything can be bet on.

We could create a couple of global simple ones for a start (like roulette) to see how players respond to it.

Gambling? Has been tried in another online game I play and since withdrawn again, nobody really went for it.

Maybe a quest or similar which can just about be done with standard turns or auctionable items but which will go much better if players buy credits?

With rewards relating to the game, ie a Man'o'War or a particularly sleek frigate or whatever.

What if the rewards from repeatedly winning at gambling required credits to open like a certain crate-and-key system we all know from another game?
You could get a great reward for something hard eg. winning 5 games in a row of Blackjack or a small reward after winning 50,000 gold on the roulette table which is easy given enough time (although you will probably lose more than 50,000 while doing it...). Or maybe a player could choose to get a large reward after winning 1M on the roulette table. (I'm just brainstorming here)

Small prize ideas: a random prize is selected after meeting certain conditions:
20,000 gold
1 random common card
20 turns
100,000 gold that requires 2 credits to open
1 uncommon card that requires 2 credits to open
1 rare card that requires 8 credits to open

Medium prize ideas: these prizes require either a certain amount of skill or luck
40,000 gold
2 random common cards
40 turns
100,000 gold that requires 1 credit to open
1 uncommon card that requires 1 credits to open
1 rare card that requires 4 credits to open

Large prizes: Only available for the high-rollers (maybe 100,000+ gold wagers?): for winning 1M total gold or getting 2 "BlackJacks" in a row?
200,000 gold
200,000 fame that requires 1 credit to open
2 uncommon cards
4 uncommon cards that requires 2 credits to open
1 rare card that requires 2 credits to open

I know you are always looking to prevent cheating/exploiting so maybe you would need to put a daily limit on how many times you can gamble... I really don't know.

A daily ship race would be great! Everyone could bet and everyone would see the same result. And we could see a running tally of who has made the most correct predictions and who has won the most gold from betting this month. And it resets each month so someone isn't the leader forever.

6 boats could race each day (each with a different nation's flag) and the betting is zero-sum. So if Barbados' boat is super popular and I pick Spain's boat I could receive more gold because the gold is split between less people. In this system 1st place would take 70% of the prize pool and split it among the winners. 20% of the pool would go to 2nd and 10% split to the 3rd place betters. To keep it interesting you could get a 15% winning bonus if your chosen boat flies your nation's flag and places in the top 3. To make it even more interesting a boat that has placed in the top 3 in a race within the last week will have a slightly higher chance of winning (+2-10%?). So the more bets would probably be placed on the boat who won twice this week but the payout would be higher for the other boats if they won. The ship's flag could be chosen out of the top 40 by fame and top 40 by influence so that a nation would not always be racing.

I'm just throwing out ideas and seeing if any of them stick :)

I really like this idea. Perhaps this could be incorporated into the tavern despite how messy it is.

I think there is a similar gambling suggestion out there that we can merge this with. Id have to look. I think it may have even been by me to create the suggestion if i remember right.

I can see where gambling could be a wonderful gold coin/bar or even credit sink for PG. Something CJ is always looking for ways to accomplish and what better way than gambling it away to those who care to 'indulge'.
Also a great way to kill idle time while waiting for that next shipload to arrive in port.

Gambling is definitely something that we can delve into. The only downside I see of this suggestion is that we are still in a discussion phase of it. It is very open ended. There are a variety of different avenues that we can take to implement this and each could be a different specific suggestion. This could easily be implemented small scale with some simple universal games, to something bigger such as a port building dedicated to gambling where different ports offer different games and changing odds of winning and bet limits.

I like this idea but I think further discussion is in call.

Maybe for players aged 18+ but not keen on it in a game that a lot of kids play

This is all fine and dandy; but how would one go about checking they were 18?
