Player owned Tavern Chat

We are always looking for ways to improve the game. In fact, since the beginning player suggestions had played a major part in game design.

We read all suggestions.

Player owned Tavern Chat

I am suggesting a Tavern chat - to go along with any other features we are
getting in player owned Taverns


Tavern chat system

Tavern owner - creates an atmosphere description of their tavern.
Similar to a guild description page.


Tavern has an event notification

Posting things that are happening in the tavern


The tavern events log shows when a player enters or leaves the tavern

The tavern events log shows when a player moves from zone to zone


When you enter A tavern you must pick a zone.
a column to the far right will display a field for each zone and a list of players in that zone,

You can speak with anyone that is in your zone in a chat setting
like guild chat.

You can move to another zone anytime you want.

If you move from one zone to another zone an event will post.
in the tavern


Possible zones in the tavern

bar
back room
tables east wall
tables west wall
table in corner
front porch
back alley

Each area can have a description provided by the owner.


Suggest we have some predefined tavern related actions
- just additional emoticons.

If you indicate an action it will post an emoticon in chat and post in the
tavern events

possible actions / emoticons

draw sword
draw pistol
fist fight.
take cover
drink
buy a drink



The chat system for tavern would be 3 chat boxes.
column 1 zone - column to the left - think of guild chat
column 2 ease drop - middle column upper - think of guild forums
column 2 shouting. - middle column lower - think of guild latest posts



Shouting - when you want players in other zones to hear what you are saying.
- suggest a checkbox to select a specific zone
or option of all zones.

In column 2 shouting. - middle column lower - will function the same way guild chat works

People shouting at your zone from other zones will post here.

This is also where you shout from. So you just type statement in just like guild chat.



Ease dropping

- you can select 1 zone and listen in on their conversations.

the upper box in column 2 is the ease drop column, you can select 1 other zones,
if selected on their conversation will post in this part second column

it will post comments just like guild chat, however you cannot respond, just listen

Adding privacy and spying and another area - back room

Privacy and spying

Private areas,

Going to suggest alley has a 75 percent chance of being safe from ease drop.

Back room. The back room is a private area that is rented out by the tavern owner.
It has a 100 percent chance of being safe from ease drop.

Spies.

You can hire tavern employees to spy on the alley and backroom. Cost will depend in their chance of success ( how good a spy they are) and if they are trying to spy the alley or the back room. A spy or is successful will result in an ease drop conversation. The 50% of the fee will be paid to the Tavern owner unless the spy is caught.


I suggest that when in the private areas there is an indicator of how safe your conversation is. It is your responsibility to watch out for spying.
You would need to follow a link to a page that reports things like.

if you are being spied on,

You heard shuffling feet,
You saw movement in the shadows,
Don't trust the barmaid
There is someone standing behind you

or if you are safe

Pretty certain you are the only ones in the ally,
Its ok they cant hear us
Don't worry the barkeep will not tell a sole
I would not worry about him, he is out cold.

Catching a spy

If you see a being spied on message, and click on it, there is a luck based chance you will catch the spy.

If you notice a spy there is a 50% chance they escape and cannot be identified
however if you catch the spy you get 100% of the fee they charged their employer ( the patron not the tavern owner).

I would assume that all chat would have to be IC (in character/RP)
I'm only here for Game Development and Forum Moderation.

But talking IC about game relevant things should be strongly encouraged,
but not required.


I had explored this as a much broader structured role play system,
in which taverns were only a small part, in that form it would been only IC.
The whole thing was user defined role playing areas that were setup like my tavern
suggestion, and players could move between them. With an archiving system to log it
as a story. Overall it seemed to be to restrictive, So I trimmed it down to be a chat system for taverns only.

Are you suggesting each player has or can build their own tavern? That would be a lot of taverns...

If so, might I suggest they be built with resources and gold/credits/bars at a port of player's choice and not be automatically given, and a "visit the taverns" link be available at port where you are located that pulls up a list of taverns at that port?

After all, if someone would say

Hey I'm under attack, could you cast a Purify?

Would he/she be talking IC or not? Of course it's not what it's "generally" reknown as roleplaying, but that sure is an in-game talk.

I see the taverns being used for role play, perhaphs you could even a record toggle. So conversations members in the tavern that want to role play could opt in to being recorded on an archive page as they chat with each other and move around the tavern.


However I also see them being used more to interact with people outside your guild. Maybe just socially, or sometimes for business.

Maybe a draft team that is forming are all meeting at a tavern.

Maybe the council from two nations are meeting to
Discuss a treaty, or a port deal



I think anything game related should be ok.
So it you want to ask the witch doctor at the bar to cast hostile natives on the player at the table in the corner because he is being irritating. Why not. If your the "that guy " in the corner and you want to ask the table full of merc members if one of them will sell you some purify to clear those hostile natives. Why not.

It should be a tavern, want to discuss game mechanics,
Game development ideas, start an argument, celebrate,
See what others are up to. All is good.


Discourage discussion of out of game topics.
