1) Technically ships didn't always keep their names. Ships were renamed.

2) Ship names could and should be logged in the Ship's Journal

3) Locking names that are inappropriate, although Admins could wipe them, but I'm sure that's not a priority as I'm sure there are dozens of ship names out there that are inappropriate.


The British Navy considered it ill-luck to re-name a ship so always kept a prizes name unless it was the same or similar to an existing Navy ship. Then it would be changed but still considered unlucky for then vessel.
This accounts for the preponderance of oddly 'foreign' ship names in British Navy lists in the Napoleonic era.

True, but Pirates weren't known to keep the name of the ships they stole.
