Increased Prices

I'm curious to know why the sudden GIANT leap in the prices for buying more officers, purchasing ships and upgrading ships. I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that this game is based on a cycle. (Play till a certain event occurs then start over again) If this is the case, why not wait till the current cycle is finished then start these new higher prices. Those players who are in the top 10 have a HUGE advantage over the newer players. Doesn't seem like this increase was very well thought out. Of course, I MIGHT be a little biased as I was just about to upgrade all my Ships of the line only to find that the next level cost 2,250,000 gold. I guess another option might be to have larger profits from trading.
