How about makeing trading a deeper system insted of just transporting stuff for gold?
Maybe make a supply/demand system where each oprt creats a certan ammout of items and uses so many aswell, with their export being the thing they make the most of, and players can adversly effect the prices by importing/exporting to and from the port in question.
Just a thought

There is also a supply/demand which affects quantities and prices.
If I understand well, you also want the players to be able to produce resources themselves ?

no, more of and all ports make everything, but they dont make enough in some areas, and they make too much in others. thus producing a much more rearangable economic system which can be much more diversly effected by what people are importing and exporting between the ports.

It is the players that empty specific ports. It is up to the players again to use the ports that have excess resources for trading routes.

I use the port a lot. I used all my fleet in that port. But It can't produce enough goods for my fleet to trade in a day.
