Naval combat rules

Hello, Captain Jack!

I've been trying to find out exactly how naval combat works, but can not find any written rules about this. Sure, there is a little something under "ship characteristics", but this is hardly sufficient. Is there any description anywhere about exactly how naval combat works? I mean a detailed, precise explaination? All that the "ship characteristic" says, is a general, vague thing about what each parameter effects (damage, hit probability, damage absorption). I cannot find anywhere HOW the final probability to hit pr. cannon is calculated, nor how the final determined damage pr. cannon is determined. Please help?

I guess it would be possible to reverse engineer this, but it would take a lot of time, and preferrably include sparring with another player (to know the characteristics of the ships on both sides). And it seems unneccessary, as these rules obviously exist in some form, since it has been implemented.

I would like to delve into that set of calculations too :)

If you look into the old forums when PG first started, Cpt jack explained that all the battle parameters were not fixed but controlled by a roll of the dice so to speak. This meant that with a good role a low level ship could sink a large ship ( as in real life ).
Factors such as Bless and favourable wind. Control the skies and drums of war plus several more all alter the roll

It means its chance based?
Isn't that kind of unfair?

Realistic to me.. gives the underdog a slight chance

I realize that it has a stochastic element. I still want to know the exact rules, so I would be able to calculate the probability of cannons of one ship to hit another, if I knew the parameters of both ships. As well as the probability distribution of the damage such cannons would do, were they to hit.

This means a fleet with 5 60-att sotl can lost to a lvl 1 cutter? With a 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% to lost?

I've seen a battle report in which a warship with just 6 HP left went on the beat three ships without any further loss of HP : chance is indeed an element in the calculations : but that was a freakish result : more generally, the better your ship and its set-up, the 'luckier' you will be...
