That said, I agree that "minus votes" is a bad idea. However, I also agree with Danik that something to help the Top Helper awards become more functional is a good idea.
A problem with this feature, in my opinion, is that it is primarily for relatively new players. They are the ones getting help, and they are the ones who can vote for those helping them. However, new players have plenty of other stuff to learn, the "top helper" is not important to them. The only way they learn about this, is if someone explains it to them.
So when helping a new player, you gotta go "... and that's how plunder works. By the way, if you click on" top helper", you can vote on me for helping you explain this". Feels wrong. It may be a cultural thing, but to me, at least, this just feels wrong. I help them with what they need. I don't want to tell them to vote for me.
Perhaps if this was part of the tutorials, somehow?
+1 I also wouldn't want someone to vote for me for top helper unless they chose to do it by themselves.
