Perhaps a Gemstone could be worth .5(1/2) of a credit to fill a need in game for a partial credit.

Maybe a technology in Academy can allow mining to begin.
Of course the appropriate hiring costs and wages must be paid to miners to reflect the true cost of a gem and these costs should reflect what 1/2 a credit is worth.
How they get out into the market ?
Perhaps sell them through your banker ?
Banker can resell to the public or try to sell them yourself for larger profits
The cost to make and the selling price should allow a banker to make a small profit and the producer make a small profit. Bankers buying in bulk should get a better rate than single purchases.

Now I am rambling...

They are like gold, but they have a rating system. And the better the gem the higher the value, from maybe 10k gc for the lowest quality and a few millions gc for the best quality, which is very rare. But just like gold, they must have a meaning to it.

It will cost more to make this then gold, a lot more.

In theory, I like the idea of gems in the game.
Diamonds, rubies, pearls and the like would have made up a significant portion of a pirates treasure hoard.
But as to how they would be available or how much they would be worth I do not know.
None of the ideas presented so far appeals to me.
I don't know, it seems to me if they ain't got you one way they got you another,
So what's the answer? that's what I keep asking myself, what's it all about?
Know what l mean?

We like the idea but none of the ideas presented here for the usage seems good enough for us to implement this. However, more brainstorming could lead us to something that we can accept so you better not give up on this.

There is only so few things they can be used for, upgrading buildings, building ships, upgrading ships, build buildings, for research, etc.
But the idea of that they have no use and people will just keep tons of this seems nice.

We got gold bars for such usage. Gems could be a luxury resource that does different things. For example, we could use them in a turns exchanger or to buy Legendary Voodoo recipes. Or they could have an enormous gold coin value when sold to the game market. Surely we can get enough ideas so we can choose the best.

Gems should be found as a random, and rare, booty bonus when attacking NPC's : I disagree with any gradation of quality : gems is gems and their value should be high, perhaps 10-1 relative to gold bars and they should be tradable in exchange for such gold bars : I think gems should not be 'stored' anywhere, being small and transportable, they will be considered to be kept on your person and thus are not affected by voodoo such as OLOD or Rotten Food : they are also not lost in skirmish attacks.

That's a good starting point.
Used in Recipes for Witch Hut is also spot on and should be included.
