I see your point Wolfie but everyone would be under the same restrictions as only a few people would have the ability to build these ships.
I suspect guilds would make sure there was 1 ship specialist among their membership that could build speciality ships custom order for their guildmates and in that case, anyone would have access to whatever type of ship the builder could produce.

Perhaps you would hear of a ship builder in another guild you may want to build your ships because he uses more Iron in his build and ships are tougher for instance or there is another ship builder that has a special ability you would desire.

Shipbuilding secrets could be a extremely interesting feature that a talented shipbuilder could exploit and be somewhat interesting profession for some to practice

I see what you want to say but I still believe that this could benefit even more because those ship builders need stock of materials to build those ships and waiting to research all those tricks and benefits will require materials and gold so I doubt that those ship builders would easily share those ships without getting nice ammount of gold coins or credits in return even if it is for guild memebers.
And it will be some time till they release academy and shipwright in hideout so this can be replacment until they don't release them. Noone said that this need to become forever.

I like the idea of more cargo space

Good suggestion, must be careful though, the largest military vessels (if removed of their cannons) would be fast LMMs this way...

That's true so maybe limit it only on merchant ships

Aye, thinking on it, it offers up a wide variety of strategies for fleet composition, trading off power for capacity : I like it more and more so, gets my vote.

edit : I dont think we need worry over-much about folk stripping cannon from big warships to create super-LMM's.. at 10-17mil a pop, its not really an economically effective strategy : but maybe weakening frigates, say removing 50% cannon might be a way of working it, for any attacker wont know if they at full power or not : uncertainty does add spice to combat...
