Joxill is right, I have heard a few of our members complain of buggy chat, so its not just him.

having trouble talking to friends through IM, hasn't been working for about 2 weeks. checked chat options and everything is abled all I get is systems pop-up notices of new players. but when any friends try to get a hold of me, they have to go to inbox

That's some serious grave digging

Make sure your friends have you in their friendlist and you the same.
Have you tried to Hit shift + f5 to refresh? Not that it solves anything but since I am unsure of your problem, it might help.

Generally, the only known problems are with small screens.
