Crew numbers on your trade ships

Postby Captain dungeness » Tue Sep 27, 2011 7:34 am

I'm curious how other captains are crewing their ships. Do you sail your trade ships with a full crew or with only 15 crewmen per ship?

Since it costs upkeep gold to have full crews I have been only hiring 15 crew per trade ship. I believe this decision for each player significantly affects the production of each port since each port produces the total number of hired crew for all players + 10,000.

It seems like the ports are producing about 180k goods each time so I'm guessing that's about 170,000 total crew. I believe I can increase that number to about 190,000 total crew if I sailed all my Large Merchantmen and Trade Galleons with full crews instead of only 15 each.

Do you think it is worth it to produce an extra 20,000 goods at each port? If a bunch of players all hired more crew, how much more production do you think we could all get?

Go at ship screen and click Hire Crew.

Regarding the crew number, it also affects ship combat strength while in the future it will also affect Ship Speed (I am 995 sure that this particular feature it is not yet implemented)

As for production, the formula is: total crew hired + 10000

You go to the market, and then you should see shipyard on the right hand menu. click that and hire a captain. Then go back to it and click it again and it will show you the ships you can build and what resources you will need to build them, along with gold and time. all the resources will need to be in the warehouse at the port your going to build the new ship at.

If you join Storm Shelter, you will learn how many crew members you should use.

I crew my trade and transport ships so that they travel as fast as they can without raising the level of the ship or placing it in danger. This allows me to see if someone was foolish enough to use voodoo on me and nets me the most risk-free profit.

Combat ships get full crew and cannons and if they don't produce enough attributes, they get sold and a new one is built in 12 hours an 10 minutes if I am playing, otherwise as soon as I am playing again.
