Each port has one company, which produces the good made in that port. At the end of each day, the shareholders of that company gets paid a dividend depending on the number of goods sold in that port that day. Say 100 M goods were sold, and there are 1 M shares in the company. Perhaps 1 gold pr good is an OK dividend, causing a payout of 100 gold pr share that day?

The "stock market" should be almost like the card market, where stocks in each company is sold for credits to other players.

Initially, all shares of all companies are owned by the system, which sells them in chunks at a certain minimum price. Players then bid on these chunks of shares, just like in the card market today.

That's a great idea to build on.

+1. Also has potential to go long ways in a more business/economics type game if you wanted to explore economy manipulation.

Has potential and may give incentive to protect port population but...

It can't be protected per default for the same reasons as why extortionists, assassins, pirates and mercenaries are not limited.

Back in the days, there were some very lucrative corporations like the British east India company. Made a fortune but
were heavily preyed on by everybody.
Anybody looked the story behind the oil wars in south america? Some heavy hitting companies inciting wars and overthrowing governments whilst
applying every trick in the book.

It does add spice to the game.

-1 Disapprove. Maybe something similar to this would be considered in more elaborate suggestions that exist.

However the concept is great and i think could and would tie in nicely through CJs more recently mentioned Trading Company suggestion ;).
