Technologies will be continued to be added as means for specialization for anything in the game.
Sooner or later, we will add technologies that will require other to be researched first.
For example, forthcoming ship special abilities.
What we mostly want to do is to add limits unlock with Technologies. This way, instead of granting free extra abilities or free gameplay improvement, we will use them as sinkers.
Which means that investment-type technologies are not in our priorities. Plantations will be yet another investment and our tests so far signal that we cannot hope them (plantations) to become the sinkers we would like them to be. The numbers simply do not work. However, adding Plantation related technologies to reach what otherwise would be free perk, is an avenue we could use.
Or similarly, you currently get to construct ANY ship for free. This can change with a new Technology.
As you may have noticed, there is abundance of gold coins. Since you do not use them for war as we hoped you would, we will have to create sinkers.
