**Raiders of Avonmora**
What happens when four of the most experienced pirates decide to take on one of the strongest players in Pirates Glory ?
First of all they need to plan how to organize the attack. It will be expensive mainly in accumulating the right number and type of Voodoo Cards and Turns. They will need to know the best time of day to attack, usually at midnight or early morning for the target, and plan on a minimum of two hours for the attack. Hoping that the guild defenses are asleep as well, timing of the raid is of the essence.
The initial step in the actual attack is to remove the target’s protection against voodoo, which may not be easy. Timing is important here. After the voodoo defenses are removed, the next step is to determine where the target’s fleets are located. If you try to do this ahead of time, the target may be alerted, which is not good. The next step is to start increasing the danger of all his fleets by casting 3 or more voodoo cards, normally Fugitive of Justice, at the top of the hour.
Typically, a raider will use a lot of expensive voodoo, at this point, to remove the target’s gold on hand. A vanquished fleet has to pay a ransom, and will lose ships if the ransom cannot be paid. Ships are stolen by draining the target's purse, and defeating his fleets. This time, the attackers decided to have some fun first by looting.
We are now 15 minutes into the raid and the raiders start attacking. A barrage of voodoo is launched, including Fugitive of Justice, Hostile Natives, and Disfavor. Unfortunately for the raiders, the Guild defenses are awake. Duchess Yumico removes the malicious voodoo. The attackers regroup and recast voodoo. They can still attack for a while but they have to rethink their strategy. Bluebeard clears the new voodoo offensive.
The attackers wait, and resume 40 minutes later with a new plan. They seem to have a new strategy. They begin to cast voodoo to remove the target’s gold on hand, so that they could steal some valuable ships. Perhaps they hope to loot enough gold to make the plundering easier, perhaps they don’t have enough Booty Master voodoo cards to deplete the target’s purse.
Whatever the reason, it is two hours into the raid before they get to the main attack. By this time a new Guild defender, JB-Duke, is awake and interfering with their raid. Luckily for the attackers, he was a bit too late to stop them from draining Teach’s gold on hand. Haron is the attackers’ voodoo master and he counters JB-Duke by limiting the effectiveness of the defensive voodoo he can cast.
Now the pirates step up their attacks, they know that they have little time left and are running out of turns and resources. So they desperately make use of the opportunities that remain to steal ships. They do manage to steal some valuable ships at this time. But, in the blink of an eye, it is all over. More guild defenses are available at this point, and Teach himself has come online. The attackers are all but spent - they have nothing left. The raid is over.
PGPromo Team has reached out to those involved in the raid, as well as the target, EdwardTeach. PGPromo would like to thank these players for their contributions in preparing this analysis. These players have all agreed to be interviewed by our correspondents and recount their experience in this epic raid. And now, let's hear their comments in their own words.
**Haron - Pirates Glory Legend**
Q: Do you have anything to say on the raid strategy or the guild defense ?
A: It was expensive. But that is to be expected with such raids: High risk, high possible profit.
We knew a guild mate of his was active and did not abort. That was the main error: When a guild mate of the target shows that he's active, it is usually best to abort. However, it is still possible to succeed, if one is very fast. Due to some communication problems, one participant who had never before participated in such raids, failed to understand exactly what to do. That slowed us down considerably, and so we were not fast enough. And with an active guild mate online, and our momentum lost, we could never get the success we had hoped for.
We did steal five Ship of the Line, but that did not cover our costs.
Q: Will it be better next time or was it too expensive
A: Of course there will be a next time! Raids will keep happening. No person with a valuable ship should feel safe. Any ship can be stolen, it's just a matter of how expensive it is to do.
How to do a raid is relatively easy in principle: Drain the target's purse, weaken the target fleets, then attack them. The problem is how to drain the target's purse. There are several options, all with advantages and disadvantages. And it usually costs a LOT of turns, so for major raids, cooperation between several players is necessary. For details, contact your local Naval Combat Solutions Provider.
Q: Do you have anything to say on guild defense ?
A: As for how to defend, that's all too easy. Any large guild knows how to defend against such raids. And they are alerted once an attack starts. The "alerts" when guild mates are attacked is the reason why ships are not stolen more often. It is very easy and very cheap to defend a guild mate once you know an attack is going on.
Q:Were you limited by your weak fleets
A: Weak fleets are not a problem when fire ships are used properly. That is not a limitation. Had we used ten fire ships, as was my intention, against each target fleet the outcome of the raid would have been very different.
So the limitations were: Target had an active guild mate, and fire ships were used wrong, which cost us time we didn't have. The blame for not aborting despite seeing an active guild mate is mine. The blame for being too slow goes to communication problems. I should probably have been clearer.
Q: You waited 2 hours to cast Booty Master was there a reason for this ?
A: Why we waited before casting Booty masters I will not comment at this time.
**Anne Bonny - Queen of the Pirates**
Q: How did you organize the raid ?
A: We would meet on a sandbank hidden amongst the mangroves that only appears on the highest of tides, whilst under the moon bathed in darkness and stinking of rum. Around a small fire we would share old tales, the richest tobacco's the finest rums the land has to offer and what was to become the sweetest of all, our dreams and plans for the future.
Q: You seemed to have been the best attacker - Haron's voodoo was effective if oddly timed
A: This was a team effort and Haron's attacks were timed well depending on your point of view.
The raid strategy was a little different then usual but with the target in mind it was going to have to be.
Edward Teach holds his position for a reason and with his personal defence alone for a single Pirate to sail away with enough gold worth bragging about after his retaliation, well the myths are few.
JB Duke having proven himself over time to be a reliable and effective defender of those around him, sometimes firing cannon and voodoo in a rather cavalier attitude for a governor. You have to respect a man who actively stands for what he believes in and as a result was always going to have to be considered as another factor in the raid. we had him on account.
Q: What went right, what went wrong, will it be better next time or was it too expensive ?
A: We moved as a team and our timing wasn't bad, this raid proved that with the right crew anything is possible. Even those that carry the largest of purse's are not safe from a small, salty, drunk, crew, that work well together.
Q: Haron waited 2 hours to cast Booty Master and then you had your final push - were you rethinking strategy ?
A: We were never rethinking strategy only timing, the hour, the day. Timing was always vital.
Q: The timing was odd - USA thought that the raid was over a couple of times
A: USA was meant too, I am looking forward to playing around with that type of raid again in the future it was a lot of fun.
I never fail, I loot or I learn and I pay for every lesson. Some lessons are more expensive than others and I believe that the total cost of this is yet to be known... It was worth it, I had a blast and look forward to whatever lies ahead after all with experience and teamwork my biggest hauls are closer every day
**Zephore - Distinguished Privateer**
Q: How did you organize the raid ?
A: Anne Bonny, Argonaut, Haron and I sat down to make a plan. Then it was just the time of execution that mattered.
The plan was supposed to be executed fast and efficient.
However, as people noticed, some points went wrong - but in our hearts and mind, it was a victory. We lost value, but damn we had a jolly laugh.
So, what went wrong, you may ask?
The chaos factor. The guild, didn't do much to hinder our raid, I must confess. Sure, they did ruin the raid, but they intervened a bit too late - allowing us to almost pull it off. Almost, just isn't good enough.
Desiree had been a thorn in the side of Haron, but didn't really hinder our progress. JB, on the other hand, got a bit quick with his time spirals, at one point, but alas, he didn't hinder too much either, because I reacted quickly, and shot back.
However, rumour is, someone else started to fling a little voodoo on Teach too. Who, what or when, I do not know.
Teach's guild didn't do too much to hinder us. We ran with a fleet, and another ship. Not what we aimed for, but along the way, we ran into a small problem... Our fire ships, had done nothing! We quickly had to rearrange assets, to discover that, limit of certain voodoos had been reached.
To those in Teachs guild who did react, such as JB, nicely done.
Quick reactions, just not the right person you aimed for. ''Who'' could one ask? Should've taken all the raiders, be my answer.
Our timing was almost perfect. The few in U.S.A who were on, didn't shut our raid down.
I saw little to no effect from generosity, or buried treasures.
The chaos factor, in this case, the player base, who wanted to join in, was our damnation.
The guild, reacted slow - sure ruined a bit of our timing, but didn't really save Teach too much either.
I hope Teach hold no grudges though, as it was nothing personal, and he is a great guy.
Matter of fact, the whole U.S.A is.
**The Argonaut - Anne Bonny’s Apprentice**
The Argonaut is an enthusiastic pirate - always willing to learn even if it means to go down fighting, always willing to help
Q: How did you organize the raid ?
A: Teach is a biggie and has to carry a great deal to cover his butt..that makes him very juicy and hard to resist .. but not someone you would consider in the normal bounds of a daily raid -so some pirate is going to have a crack at a big fat fish at some time…
It was a big challenge and we knew it would take some careful planning to pull it off. We all had input to the plan and we got it sorted. At first, there was the decision to be made whether we would hit and run and grab as much as we could manage or work a decisive, sustained plan over some hours....We were right in our choice to sustain it - USA admits they were taken by surprise with the 2nd wave. It was a good strategy.
I made a lot of mistakes...rookie ones at that - a pirate can get rusty quickly. For me I didn't really know what I was doing with those fireships - haven't used them before...so that's not good.
In the end it didn't matter...Teach was too strong and we all missed our mark at some point...only one pirate managed to take a fleet.
In monetary terms the raid was a loss for me. In terms of learning and experience I won big time - I have a much better idea of what it will take to be successful with such a big target.
Traders are always complaining about what it costs them when attacked by pirates.
Pirates have no guarantees as shown in this instance. Or many other raids that get shut down quickly. There are many non-successful raids, just not always such a big target...There are always unseen variables.
**Wally - A more or less innocent bystander**
Wally showed up near the end and looted 4 merchants
Haron did contact me and said “you’re dead” and I said, “no, just old and sick, what’s up? and he splained that I cost the crew over 1000 credits and I said, “by taking four traders?” And we went back and forth until he realized that I am a harmless idiot and not nearly smart enough to be a nefarious raid ruiner. So he went to look elsewhere....

Q: You were offline when the raid began. Your Guild mates stepped up to defend against the attacks. How did that go?
A: Dutchess Yumico was right on point and is a proven champ at casting clearing voodoo. She regularly looks out for her fellow Guild-mates. Her response time was really good too. She was casting Purify about a minute after the first FoJ hit. She cleared a total of 3 Fugitives of Justice, 3 Hostile Natives, a Disfavor, and a Swarm within a minute or so after they lit me up. I think the raiders had anticipated this possibility, and were quick to cast more voodoo. Yumi slowed them down, and cost them some turns too. She was on high alert and did a great job as a first responder.
Haron quickly cast 3 more Hostile Natives after that. It was Bluebeard stepped up then, casting 3 Serenity to clear me for a second time. The voodoo attack continued with Haron casting Booty Masters and some Ravage from Zephore. A little later JB showed up casting Generosity and then he dropped a Mindbar. That helped out a lot, taking some of the wind out of their sails, and costing them yet more turns to remove it. JB also cast Time Spirals on the raiders. This cost the raiders still more turns that would have been used to further the raid. The TS certainly reduced the total damage that could be inflicted during the raid. When raiders run out of turns, the raid is over.
The attacks resumed with Argo and Haron casting Call Leviathan and Anne casting Ambush with her customary wave of Fire Ships. It was then that the raiders were able to start plundering my ships. Fortunately for me, I came on line about then, just checking in. Strangely enough, I didn’t immediately notice that I was getting raided. I began with my usual routine until I saw I had like 513 “New Events” LOL. I quickly got a Mindbar in place (along with about a half dozen Countercurse) and started doing some damage control. The raid was pretty much over at that point.
I want to thank my Guild mates for the valiant defense they put up on my behalf. It was a fine response that certainly saved me a lot of ships and gold. A cohesive defense was needed to repel a coordinated attack like the one we saw. Special Props to Yumi, JB, and Bluebeard. Thanks to all and God bless the USA!
Q: Why did Haron wait 2 hours to cast Booty Master ? I know they were getting 250k+ per attack
A: It is possible that at a certain point the objective of the raid turned from plundering gold to stealing ships. The raid did seem to occur in two waves. I went into the raid with about 30 Million (or so) gold coin in my purse. Not sure exactly how many Booty Masters Haron cast, but it takes up like 2 pages in my Voodoo Log. LOL. Eventually, my gold did get so low that ships could be stolen. Having JB around to cast Generosity saved me quite a few of my ships I reckon.
Q: According to our analysis, you only lost 5 Ship of the Line ,3 Sloop of War, and a few Large Merchantman/Trade Galleons ?
A: That sounds about right. I reckon I got off lucky there. It was a well planned raid, executed by a cadre of experienced players that acted in a very coordinated manner. I can see that there was a lot of preparation, strategic and logistical. Specific roles (duties) were assigned to the various raiders involved, in order to strike in a prescribed manner. Studying this raid should provide some valuable insight to those wanting to learn how it’s done.
Q: Anne_Bonny was pretty ruthless, comments?
A: Yes, she is one of the most ruthless players in the game today. No quarter asked or given. I remember one time, a few years back, she lost a battle to me when skirmishing one of my fleets. She got so mad, she spent 10 Levis just to sink a mid level SotL from that fleet. I reckon Anne must have salvaged her. I looked for the ship in DJ’s locker, but she wasn't to be found. LOL
Q:Haron was good with voodoo but seemed to be limited by his weak fleets, comments?
A: I think Haron was the mastermind behind the raid and gets props for that. Voodoo is a Pirates best friend and he cast a gang of it. The raiders, collectively, threw about everything they had at me (kitchen sink included). It was an immense effort and I’ve never seen anything like it. It serves as a fine example of Piracy.
As far as the composition of fleets sailed by Pirates, what we saw was pretty much par for the course. Raiders mostly sail Sloops and Frigates, They hardly ever sail Ship of the Line. The Ship of the Line that they plunder, they normally sell at auction. I reckon that they roll this way so as not to make themselves a high value target in the event of a retaliation.
