The priest says a quick prayer as jack looks around, a sad look on his face.

So many men...I'll have to recruit some more.

Brian shakes his head as he laughs a little.

Honestly, Jack I don't see how you manage to recruit anyone at all. Sure your a skilled man and a good leader, but given how high the death rate is for working for you, almost seems like only a suicidal person would sign up at this point.

Carl nods as he laughs a little.

Gotta admit, if I wasn't a crazy lunatic, id probably never go with Jack anywhere.

Ellen floats in from the nearby wall as she hovers nearby. She looks a bit surprised and confused

Why did you all go down the deadliest path when the middle one was clear? Didn't the apprentice warn you about what was ahead?

jack looks around

Don't know Ellen... and that hurts Carl.

Jack looks to Brian

The death rate is generally lower, enough to sail the ship, fight the guns and so forth. And, if you survive under my command, there is a 100 percent chance of getting filthy rich, which is a pretty good incentive for sailors to join up. I get more than 200 men vying to join up at least once a month.

Carl gets a bit serious as he pats Jack on the shoulder.

Mate, I'm just messing with you, id probably still help out even if I wasn't crazy on account of us being friends. That being said, being crazy makes doing stupid crazy stuff like fighting mages a lot easier.

Emily comes back, and quickly chats with Ellen. Emily stomps her foot in anger.

That bloody apprentice sent us down the wrong path. Actually, odds are it was probably one of Rhena's not ours. I wish Vune would have made some code word to verify. But of course not. She probably thought of it and decided to make it harder for us.

Ellen just nods.

Vune doesn't really care about the lives or safety of non-mages unless they are her friends or family. So it makes sense she wouldn't put much effort into making sure Jack and his crew would come out alive-since she knows you will be fine no matter what.

Emily looks to Ellen before speaking

Is the other path still clear? Can we go back and go down the safe route.

Ellen quickly checks and confirms it is no longer safe. Emily curses.

Great. Further in it is. Let's go. Path is safe for a while down this way.

Emily quickly goes further in, Brian, Agnar and their men follow, Ellen just floats around before speaking.

I will follow behind and cover the rear. I have enough energy to help for a while before i must rest again.

As they walk Emily calls back to Jack and his men.

Hope you men know how to use a canoe as well as your normal ship. Because we will be going down a river sadly. The good news is, that we have JUST enough men to fill both boats.

Near the end of this path, the land ends and a very large river courses through. The water is rapid, and freezing cold. 2 large canoes are on the shore-each being able to hold about 10 men. Brian sighs as he looks to the water before removing his heavy armor.

Just in case I fall off my armor won't drag me down.

Ellen looks to the water and simply floats down the river to scout ahead. Emily chants for a while before floating up. She calls to the others.

The rest of you will need to use the boats.

Brian, Carl and Agnar and his men hop into one canoe, with 5 spots left. They call for Jack and the priest to hop on theirs.

Jack and his men get into the boat and begin to row down the river, jack whistling as they do so.

The waters get faster and rougher, making Ellen or Emily occasionally shout warnings of rocks coming toward them, to help them steer around them. After about 10 minutes, Emily and Ellen both shout to hold on tight, as the canoes end up going down a series of small waterfalls, spraying the ice cold water all over all of them, soaking them to the bone. The water calms down for a moment, before speeding back up again, as they enter more rapids with more rocks. Ellen floats by and says somewhat worried.

There is going to be more waterfalls up ahead, along with another set of rapids then after that you will reach land. Just try to avoid the rocks and brace yourself for the future drops.

Carl and Brian nods, as they shiver in their clothes before bracing for the next set of rapids and waterfalls.

Figures can be seen under the water, as the other canoe gets toppled by lizard-men, who quickly drag, drown and kill the men there. Emily curses as she blasts lightning down into the water around Jack's canoe, killing some of the lizards nearby, and keeping the others away. The quickly flee having taken out one of the canoes. The rest of the rapids is tough, but they manage to make it to the end, soaking wet and freezing, but still alive. Emily and Ellen help them out of the canoes, as a robed figure comes forward looking confused

Why did you lot not take the middle path? The right path was the hardest and most difficult. Regardless, the good news is that your getting close to her lair.

He points down a nearby path, several miles further a large building can be seen in the distance.

There's a crap ton of guards, defenses and a very large powerful demon and its minions guarding the outside of it. She seems to have opened a small portal into hell to keep the demon and its minions from being banished back. Not sure what's in the lair-probably her and her apprentices.

The figure hands some dry clothes and robes to the group before heading out.

My work is done, good luck, you will need it.

Brian quickly starts a fire, and begins warming and drying himself before changing clothes. Carl sits by him, while Ellen goes forward to scout.
