Jack salutes from the fighting top

Aye aye sir.

Jack comes down, eats his meal very quickly, and rushes off the great cabin and knocks on the door.

Permission to enter sir.

The captain opens the door and lets Jack in. He waits a minute for Leonard to show up, nods to him and closes the door while Leonard waits outside the captain goes over and sits down and nods to Jack before speaking rather seriously.

Now, you are probably wondering why I called you here, you see Jack, it has come to my attention that a possible mutiny may be in the works at the moment, I suspect Larry is behind it but I'm not positive yet, and I have no idea who I can or can not trust aside from Leonard-who goes way back with me and who's saved my arse on more then one occasion-which is why he's outside making sure no one listens in. Now I had you up in the nest all day so no one could talk to you without it being seen or heard while I decided what to do. I came up with a plan, and would like your help with it. Tomorrow, I want you to step on my boot when I come up. Ill give you 5 lashings, a few insults and order you to work under Larry in navigation all day so he can keep an eye on you. While you do that, mention how much you dislike me, and how you think I'm a bad leader, and any other gripes or complaints you can think of. If Larry is indeed planning a mutiny, he would jump at the chance to get another man to join him, and if he is loyal, he will tell you to shut it. If its the former learn all you can while going along with him, find out who all is in on it. The mutiny will probably happen the third day, so you have all day tomorrow to get info. Report all you find to Leonard, who will report to me. Now can i trust you with this job Jack?

Jack nods

Aye aye sir, I can. But why would a first lieutenant want to commit mutiny?

The captain sighs, resting his head in his hands before speaking a bit more.

Well, quite a few reasons for Larry, his life has been going downhill lately, and he blames me for it. Can't really blame him honestly. For starters we both were once in love with the same woman some odd years ago, but I won her heart and we married. That made him quite bitter but he eventually moved on a bit later. But then just recently my son had an affair with his wife, his 3 daughters, and his 2 older sisters. All of whom are now carrying children. That has made him quite enraged at my son, and by extension me. Then his only son, was so disgraced by the incident he hanged himself and left in his death note how he hated the pitiful man his father was, and stated if he had any honor he'd have done something about it. However even after all that, when this mission came he INISTED to our superiors that he would serve as my 2nd in command. And he also insisted to help pick the crew. I will confess I am not the smartest man, but even I know it doesn't add up that someone who hates me would WANT to serve under me. I can see it in his eyes he wants revenge, so what better way then to kill me at sea and blame it on pirates.

He nods.

I plan to, but I would like some proof and a few witnesses before I go and do so. I hope I'm wrong and Larry just wants to make amends on this trip, but I do not think that is the case. Regardless tomorrow we will hopefully find it. You are dismissed.

The captain opens the door and see's Jack out. The next morning he goes through with the first part of his plan, and now Jack is currently working alongside Larry. He nods to Jack and motions him over to the helm.

Been a while since i seen the old captain give anybody a lashing. Tell me lad do you know how to navigate already? And on a side note how are ya liking the life in the navy so far?

Sorry if it seems im moving things a bit fast, but i wanted to make up for lost time a bit, so i moved a bit ahead of the morning plan.

Jack walks over, wincing a little as his back aches from the bosun's cane. He salutes.

I like it well enough, except for the captain, he pisses me off, but he seems skilled enough, just far too easy to break. And no, I've got little to no experience in navigation.

Larry nods.

Aye, but I wouldn't say he's all that skilled. More luck then anything. Not to mention that oaf Leonard does half the work he's supposed to do. Ill teach you some about navigation, lord knows the captain and Leonard are too busy doing nothing to actually help. Probably down there in that cabin drinking.

Larry begins telling Jack some navigation info, occasionally talking a bit about how the captain and Leonard are incompetent. It's quite obvious to Jack that Larry seems to have a very deep resentment of the 2.

Jack works excellently with navigation.

If he's so incompetent, how'd he get a captain's command? The ship seems like a rather fine one.

Leonard scoffs as he answers Jack.

Probably by spending quite a bit of time with certain superiors on his knees. Hell that might be what him and the oaf are doing now. Your still young lad but remember this-skill and talent can help in life, but there are always way's to get ahead without either. Relying on family, knowing who and who not to s**k up to, and learning to be a good brown-noser. And even the most skilled and talented can get screwed over because of stupid reasons. All the more reason why certain actions are needed.

Leonard checks the horizon and examines the ship a bit from the helm.

And yes, this is a fine ship. Should have been mine instead of the captains. Also good job on picking up navigation so quick. But just remember this advice lad-skill is good, but having good connections is normally better. You go and tick off the wrong people and you could be the greatest sailor in the world and it won't help you.
