I can confirm it does work : you do have to load the fleet manually, but set it to store at destination and it all goes into your warehouse there, the fleet then loads itself as usual and returns. I've done this several times already, at several ports, as part of preparing for the Golden Bunny event.

Edit : Actually, I just had one port move the bars straight to sale rather than to store... might be a random glitche?
