It does eliminate a major liability that traders in general cannot avoid. On the other side of the coin, its hard to advance techs without a half decent steady income stream that only comes thru trading.
Yea, you can make coin from building ships, banking, goldsmithing or pirating/privateering and combinations therein but the bottom line for me is, if you want the techs, ya gotta run trade or be prepared for it to take years to accomplish.
This is not a complaint, but rather a testament to the devs work in designing a game that can't be 'mastered' in a short few months. Something I'm sure we all agree is good.
