For them to build up a howker fleet, which can then go fetch the stocks themselves : dont take that much really..

to build 5 howkers : 800 wood / 80 iron / 48 tools / 200 cotton

As a Golem will deliver average 200+ per time : don't need many to deliver the reqd amounts ; plus if your new player has correctly sited their dockyards in a lumber port, they can buy the wood direct.
