Upkeep Costs
============
Gold - 5 per crew member per 24 hours.
Gold - 10 per cannon installed per 24 hours.

-Every crew member you hire for any of your ships, costs you 5 gold pieces per 24 hours.
-Every cannon you buy for any of your ships, costs you 10 gold pieces per 24hours.

The upkeep cost is applied at the daily update at 0:00 GMT. You can check time remaining for this at the bottom of the market page.

If you do not have enough gold to pay for upkeep, then there is a priority list of events:
1.You lose crew members from every ship, ordered by build date; This applies first in the ship you built last. You will lose all crew members till there are 15 crew members remaining for every ship of yours. This way, your total upkeep to pay will drop by 5 for each crew member fired. If you still cannot pay the upkeep, then step 2 kicks in.
2.Your cannons are automatically sold from each of your ships. Again in the same order as above. You get 40% of the base cannon price in this way (80 gold). This way, you reduce upkeep to pay by 10 for each cannon while in the same time your treasury increases by 80. If all your cannons are sold and you still cannot afford to pay the upkeep then move to step 3.
3.All your crew members are fired till the upkeep cost will meet your remaining gold. Firing is again on priority order as described in step 1.

An inactive player can end up with dozens of ships empty of crew and cannons.

I've tried casting this card to make it active. That only wasted it as far as I was concerned because I didn't get the full effect of the curse. The purpose of artifact cards should be more clear to players.

Nowhere in the explanation of Upkeep Costs does it specify how the Hidden Treasure card gets used. I was wanting to experiment to find out but then I realized how risky it would be to run around with no gold so I ask that if this card is considered active as long as it sits in my inventory and as long as I have the available turns to cast it, then this be made clear on the card and in the explanation of Upkeep Costs.

Ok, I'll post again and make my question more obvious. DOES THIS CARD REQUIRE A PLAYER ACTION TO TAKE EFFECT?

I tried this out to see what would happen. If you don't have enough cash to pay for men and cannons the card activates and you get 50k gold to help pay.

Thanks. I guess all that's needed is to have the turns available at update time. I wonder if multiple instances of this voodoo can occur on one update. obviously I wouldn't want to have to risk learning the hard way. And it's fair to say that I will not likely get the opportunity to take advantage of the full effect of this card. It's a shame I can't cast this on new players and advise them to use spend unwisely.

I know I'm replying to an old post, but I too am interested in what happens if you dont have enough for upkeep and have multiple hidden treasures. Has anyone looked into this further?

My apologies for not noticing this earlier...

Replies:
-It requires no action on your part. It will automatically consume itself only if it is needed.
-You only need to have it in your inventory.
-Multiple cards may be consumed. Even all if need be.

Case Examples:
-If you have to pay 40k and you have 30k and 1 hidden treasure, it will be consumed for 50k. As a result, your gold will be raised to 80k and the upkeep of 40k will be paid. Then you will be left with 40k.
-If you have to pay 90k, your gold is 0 and you have only 1 Hidden treasure, it will still be consumed for 50k. Then the game will remove crew+cannons to save the rest 40k. You will be left with 0 gold.

(A bit off topic: Do note, that crew is first fired down to 15 per ship and then it starts emptying each ship. So the chance to end up with immobile ships is smartly saved in the best way possible. Still, all fleets will reach destination port normally.)
