That would work well : forcing a choice on the player which will create the variation in configuration needed to add some more spice to battles.

While we are on the topic of customizing ships to spice things up a bit-

It would be interesting to see some of the other ships in the game have special qualities/benefits/abilities that would make them useful in employing different strategies in combat, or even trade. As it is, once you can afford larger vessels you don't mess much with the ones in between. Big guns and tails are all anyone seems to be concerned about. The other vessels become unnecessary.

Some vessels could even provide bonuses when paired in a fleet with other ships.

Perhaps some of the tech could be vessel specific in its application.

I know voodoo makes certain vessels important in certain conditions, but for what my opinion is worth, a ships value and usefulness should not be dependent only on a voodoo card.
