Is there any info on ship speeds, with the effect of the different attribute upgrades? I'd like to use this to optimize my trade routes. Now it only says slow or very fast. I found the post on distances already.

It has been a long time since I have done the experiment , but a few tips.

1. Fleet speed only as fast as the slowest ship in the fleet
2. Need to have max crew for max speed.
3. Cotton sails and double hammocks are the 2 upgrades that affect speed.

It is best to simply experiment.

Create a fleet with a single ship, hawker for example, max crew, hammocks and sails to 10. Then look at the travel calculator on the fleet screen to see travel times to each port.

Next try the cutter, sloop.... etc.

Once you know the travel time to a port, and the cargo limits, you can calculate trade profits.

This is just the basics to get you going. There is a lot more things to consider when setting up trade fleets, but learn the basics first.

The specific base ship speed can be found by clicking the "i" in the upper right corner of the ship picture on the ship's attribute page.

This information along with the formulas for calculating final speed should be on the wiki. The wiki and other help data can be found using the help link at the bottom of the game page.

Thanks, I found the info. But, when upgrading the cotton sails the speed remains the same. Does this only affect the speed when in combat?

Upgrades will not change the displayed value.

To know what your actual speed is, you need to calculate it.
Below are the formulas.

Formula For Ship Speed

Initial Ship Speed = Base Ship Speed + ( Base Ship Speed * 3 * Cotton Sails / 100 )   
         
Ship speed = Initial Ship Speed * ((Current Crew / Max Crew) + 1) / 2      
      
Final Ship Speed = Ship Speed + (Ship Speed * Double Hammocks / 100)

I think there is a ship calculator in Vane’s Codex that’s in the help section. Nellys is expired though.
