Trade Route

I built a trade fleet in Aiora. I setup a trade route with the first port being St.Martins and the second port Pania. Upon activating the trade route, the fleet prepared for the route, loading up in Aiora not St.Martins as I directed in the route setup and proceeding to Pania.
What I expected to happen:
Fleet traveled to St.Martins without loading up anything.
Upon arriving in St. Martins, the fleet loads up and travels to Pania
I usually don't setup routes like the above. I usually send my fleets to the starting port before setting up the route as to make adjustments for time. I assumed that the trade route would always go to the first port, load, then precede to the second port. As the fleet would usually be in the first port, I assumed the route checked that it was already in the first port and couldn't travel to it so then proceeded in the trade route process.

If I understand you would have expected the fleet to go to the first port with empty cargo bays?

Yes that is correct, as I didn't tell it to pick up anything in Aiora. My route is St.Martins - Pania, not pickup at your current port, skip the first port, then start the route St.Martins - Pania.

I've experienced this many times when editing/changing routes : I've had 4 fleets edited to a new route A>B, set them off and found 3 going to A and one to B : there is a sequence of actions/arguments a fleet takes which determines where it goes next : one is where it was in its previous set of legs and where it thought it should be arriving next : another is what cargo it has on-board as it will tend to not travel next to a same-goods port (an act which usually stalls a fleet if set thus in the trade route) and so appears to skip to a qualifying trade port instead : I fear its part of the mysterious inner workings of the code as is : to be certain of fleets commencing a new route at a port, its usually best to use 'pause fleet' to then edit the route : leave it on 'pause', use 'new destination' to send it to the preferred start point, then remove 'pause' once it is safely underway in the right direction : the trade route will then carry on as normal.
