Neither.

I often find that the DNS server provided/used by google is over-loaded and doenst respond for varying periods : not a lot can be done, its the service providers problem, not the site at the other end of the request.

I've never had such a problem. Of course, you could use Firefox, but at times, that eats WAY too much RAM on your computer. Some experiences it otherwise, but that can even make, when these google servers are overloaded, chrome being faster.

I use a MacBook and this is provided by my school. There is a security system, but it shouldn't affect it, as it never has before.

I only use Google Chrome. Has an Adblock enabled, but shouldn't do anything

It's the Macbook. I got chrome WITH, Ghostery, Adblock, Adblock plus and Ublock. No problems here either. Can only be the macbook.

It could be a browser issue.
Or something else.

From our logs, everything is fine. We usually catch even tiny downtime with our monitor tools.

I have updated this post here:
Common Issues Explained

In how to check if there is a site problem or not.

That one works. Thanks, CJ!

I'll use this to check the site when it "crashes" again and I'll post what the results are.

If it is working and you still have an issue, please consider also using traceroute as I instruct at the link above as this might give us insight on your issue.
