Hi, new to the game and have been randomly feeling my way along. I have a query on Skirmish and wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction.

When You click on skirmish you have lots of potential individuals you could attack. However, there appears to be no way to gauging the strength of the opposition and I constantly get my butt kicked. Any tips? Am I missing something fundamental.

Don't skirmish if you can't defeat them.

When skirmishing, it does not show the fleets the target has, regarding your getting "butt kicked" there is a high chance you forgot to buy cannon on your fleet.

Welcome to the forums. There is no way to know with skirmish, that is what makes it unique. However you can get a general idea if it is a trade fleet or not which generally are easier to handle than battle class fleets. Just look for long strings of fleets. Lots of time they are labeled as trader fleets as well. A fleet with a couple lvl 10 sloops should be able to handle some of the more basic ones. No guarantees though, some traders have some mean fleets.

When skirmishing, you do not get to see the ships in your target fleet before attacking, unlike when you plunder. So you need to choose your targets carefully. After some time, you'll figure out which players use heavy escorts, who use medium escorts, who use no escorts but carry cannons in their trade ships, and who simply sail around unarmed. Expect to lose some battles trying to figure this out. Or ask someone in your guild with experience in skirmishing.

The only advice I could give you is to look for new players like you ( With high ID number ) and hope that they have weak fleets.

Welcome I missed this earlier when going through the forums a fleet of sloops will cover most of what you hit but be prepared to lose occasionally. I find that skirmishing isn't the most profitable thing and that you can battle some npc's with a few sloops to get a small pile of gold going. but the pirate's that you find will be pretty hard. Although if done right skirmishing is insanely profitable and if you hit a fleet with goldbars your basically rich at least for being early game. The hard part about getting goldbars off someone by skirmishing is that goldbar fleets are insanely protected.

Just look for a player named Grimrock Litless, his fleets are very easy to beat.
