For his 9th pick, Kim chooses Meliva. Mel is the one trying to ensure we all keep our manners in the forums. Not an easy task, I'm sure. Known as "the old sea hag", she leads the Port Royal guild, training new recruits and cooperating with the more experienced players there. Lately, she convinced Nelson to join her nation of Channel Islands, and together they now hold St Martins, after what seems to have been a peaceful takeover. That's successful port action just there! While Nelson surely was the muscle in that operation, I have a hunch that Mel played a significant role in the diplomatic part of the venture. Meliva does not have the same funds as the massive traders. She prefers to play it safe, with fewer, yet stronger ships. A nightmare for plunderers and skirmishers alike, we all hope that no one will copy her very pirate-unfriendly tactics.
And that concludes round nine. Before I start commenting the rookie round, I have to say to all those who were NOT picked yet: Remember that these captains are not the most experienced in the game! They see the people appearing in the headlines, those they battle alongside, and those they fight against. I know there are many other great players out there, several who would surely have been highly prioritized in my team. The fact that you manage to remain as powerful as you are, yet so anonymous as not to be noticed by these captains, just underlines the subtleties of your play. Don't feel too safe, though. You may have been able to fool these captains, but you're not fooling me! I know who you are!
With that said, let's move on. Kim starts the rookie round, and goes for Kyle Gunwale! Kyle was off to a bumpy start, like so many other players, but is now picked up by the T'zak Ryn, and he will be undergoing strict and hard training in the months to come. He has shown that he is able and willing to learn, and his setup has already improved drastically. He is also active in the forums, which is an important part of growing into a stronger player. For rookies, it's more about potential than past achievements, as they have not yet had time to make their mark, and I think Kim is right in seeing a high potential in Kyle.
Anne Bonny takes Leo. Now, Leo has already managed to make his name known. He is often seen in the forums, writing all sorts of posts. He's also managed to get in several fights in the game already, which I'm sure will prove to be valuable experience. He is obviously eager and very active. If someone can teach him to be slightly less hot-headed - at least until he has the power to be so - and give him some advice on the more advanced aspects of the game, I'm sure he can grow strong. High activity is vital, and that is something Leo has in abundance.
Zephore's rookie pick is Eventine. Now, I can't claim to know too much about Eventine - yet. Apart from deciding that she still has too few fleets to be worth lighting up, all I know is that she is a trader in the USA guild. And that alone means she has been through much already - they recently had to face a rather vicious pirate attack, as well as fight a war against Bermuda over the port of Goroum. If Eventine paid attention to what was going on during this time, and got the proper instructions by the Giants in USA, she should already have learnt a lot. And as her fleet numbers grow, she will soon find her income to be considerable. Until someone finds out she's big enough to plunder, of course.
