But commander and captain are the same thing. Midshipman, captain, commodore, admiral

I looked it up, a commander is below a captain in navy ranks.

heres a list of ranks highest to lowest to anyone interested.

Admiral of the fleet
Admiral
Vice Admiral
Rear Admiral
Commodore
Captain
Commander
lieutenant commander
lieutenant
lieutenant junior grade/sub lieutenant
ensign/midshipman
officer cadet.

I guess, but still, I'm not sure commander actually existed during this time period...

the rank of commander is a pretty old rank. in fact I looked it up. it originated in 18th century
The title, originally "master and commander,"[1] originated in the 18th century to describe naval officers who commanded ships of war too large to be commanded by a Lieutenant but too small to warrant the assignment of a post-captain

Interesting. When exactly did in the 18th century did it originate?

says before about 1770 but doenst have an exact date. it was shortened from master and commander to just commander in 1794 though.

close enough honestly. again pirates glory doesn't need to be 100% realistic. besides if we were to use nothing but terms and such from this time period, then technically speaking a lot of nations shouldn't exist. The united states and Australia for example.
