Taking one step further this scenario, we need to make the gold resource important for players, so players will have interest to obtain it. One particular interest will be hiding gold but surely with buried treasure feature, forthcoming bank feature, this will not be enough.

Gold requirement for special buildings as already mentioned, is 100% certain.
However we are looking to add this requirement to more aspects, such as:
-Ship of the Line construction will also require gold bars.
-Hiring Officers after a point will require gold bars.
-Some voodoo cards will consume gold bars as an additional cost (some of the existing ones or new ones)

We might need to add artificial consuming techniques too, like enabling ports to be interested in gold. This can be affected by port population; The higher the population, the higher the demand for gold bars per day. Ports will pay their fee like normal players.

Any ideas on the matter, feel free to help us out here.

I think these requirements are a good idea and add more realism. I would imagine the SOTL gold bar requirement could be explained as the necessary contribution to the local craftsmen. All I ask is that gold bars are available for purchase at a large profit this will prevent new players and those without money for credits to have access to all ships and voodoo. Hiring Gold bars for Officers is another good idea, it would explain that the most elite captains require extra compensation, perhaps this should be limited to every officer after 40 or 50. Perhaps even 2 bars for officers after 70 or 80? Voodoo that requires them should only be rare in my opinion. Perhaps the future cost of controlling a port should require gold bars to sustain long term?

We don't want to control gold resource price directly. We want it to fluctuate as much as the player-base desires. We are not going to activate extra requirements, such as gold resource for SoTL, in the same day we release gold bars production. We are going to delay it. We will add these requirements gradually and this will be our indirect way to ensure that the gold resource value will be considerable.

Some key notes to remember:
-The smelting procedure (turning gold coins to gold bars) will be player controlled through player's special buildings.
-The higher the level of this building, the higher the production rate (gold coins to gold bars ratio).

This means that there will be diversify in the gold bars production price, not only to the final market price. Gold bars owners will choose when to sell. It will be certain that they will sell after a point, once demand become great. The way market will operate will make them want to sell for profit.

Port influence could be tied to gold bars as it is tied to coins now with the exception that gold bars buy a greater percentage of influence than coins do. Say coins buy 200 points for 2000 coins. Bars could then purchase 250 points for 1 bar of gold as the price stands now at 2000 gold coin / 1 bar.

We are not good with ETAs as you know. :? We want to avoid giving more.

All I can tell is that it is progressing well. The more minor updates you see, the closer we get to the release. I will post sneak peaks whenever I can.

You should prepare none the less. You need to plan where your Hideout will be placed (in which port) and start upgrading the warehouse there.
