Tutorial Missions

Postby Captain Jack » Sat Jan 05, 2013 6:50 pm

We have finally got some decisions concluded regarding how hard the nation-titles missions will be.

Our decision is that only the first mission will be able to be conducted by a small/new player. All the rest will be considerable harder with the late ones being really challenging. There will be 7 nation-title missions.

However, now that the mission backbones is ready, we want to also create a series of missions that the new player will take in order to get to know the game better and learn the controls. Such missions should cover most functionalities of the game.

Here are some examples:
1.Hire crew at your ship
2.Update your description
3.Become a Captain
4.Beat that NPC fleet (when each player starts, a weak npc fleet waits at the home-port for the beating)
etc
etc

Every mission accomplishment should come with a reward (turns, gold, ships, influence, cards, etc)

We would like your help on this. The order of the missions is also crucial. Hopefully, together we can build a both interesting and functioning list.

How about instead of a ship the new player wins a Tidal Wave card and let chance play a part. Maybe someone will have just built a Ship of the Line or has one out waiting for a friend to Commandeer. That would be exciting for a new player.
Yesterday I gave my all. Today I'll give more. Tomorrow, I'll take back what you took for granted.

X thats good . they could do a tidal wave card with gold in 10 to 20 thousand range that would allow the player to outfit the ship with crew. hey when you are new, every ship you can get is a big deal.

That would be cool if some player with decent knowledge and good accent could do it. We would replace it instantly with the current ones.

We promise to put a NPC by his name in the game, in some sort of quest/mission as a reward.
It should start from the Headquarters page, no need to cover the name your character screen that is currently included.

Since this is one of the next features that will become reality (right after Hideout and Player Banks) we need to finalize this as we near the implementation time.

The initial suggestion of John Rackham is a quality suggestion as it has a very quality list.
Feel free to give your list by taking his as a starting point.

Remember that the starting players now get:
-2000 Gold and a Sloop or 3000 Gold and a Cutter or 5000 gold and a howker
-They start with 400 turns.
-They start with a warehouse on their home port that contains 160 Wood, 60 Iron, 16 Tools and 50 Cotton.
-They get 25 turns + 10 000 gold once they have spent 100 turns.

We need to create a series of newcomers missions that will not only help them learn the game, but above all will make them like the game.

We are determined to put much care into this, including new art commissions and new actions if they are required so have your best go at this without thinking of any current limitations.

We hope for a good participation in this thread.
Our objective is to have at least 1 out of 3 new signups to try the tutorial or 1 out of 5 signups will stay as a permanent player. This would mean about 10-20 new players per day as our current signup rate is in between 50 to 100 per day. This would be a HUGE step for the game.

There is nothing in my warehouse and I really don't recall selling it.

Is this a bug?

It isn't, unless you started yesterday as this is a new addition affecting newcomers from that point after.

Ok.. i joined a week ago, so might tell you what i think... BDW My warehouse was empty as well. I had to bring materials to construct the first ship by myself.

How i suggest newcomer missions should look like:

-Create a fleet and sail to new town. Create a warehouse there.
-Create an Auto Trade Fleet and wait until it has made 500 gold profit.
-Construct a new ship (Most materials the player should get already at the start)
-Explore the world (Player should visit at least 15 towns with his fleet)
Bonus to Explore: Make 15 warehouses in towns.
-Defeat a NPC Fleet (Haven't checked much this part yet, but there should be NPC's that are easy to defeat, maybe with just 1-2Howkers or a Sloth)
-Curse someone (can be yourself)

Each finished mission should give a small reward (gold, turns or voodoo cards)
