Why does the average American household have a need for 5 guns?

I'm not questioning your right to have them... I understand different guns for different purposes but 5 guns 'per' house seems like a lot of guns to have lying around...? Consider mental health problems in this equation. Anyone can buy a gun and ammo over the counter at local store at anytime? Is this correct? Its just a really foreign concept to me and mental health problems are at an all time high...

LOL absolutely not Argo. Not anyone can buy a gun, as a matter of fact, so many that have been told for years how easy it was, and you can buy online and you can buy at gunshows... they found out how hard it really is to get a gun when the riots, opps, sorry i mean, mostly peaceful protests, started and they could get one. Mental issues, criminal records, domestic violence to name a few disqualifies you. People who say its easy to get one never tried to get one, they are just regurgitating twitter, or someone else's talking point. Its just propaganda.

Depending on the state, you may need a license to purchase a gun, and at minimum you need to have a background check done. Some states have a 3 day waiting period after your cleared on background check. Some states you need a permit to buy ammo now, and so on. Im less concerned with people who have 5 guns and more concerned with medicating everyone and sticking those who shouldn't be on the streets back on the streets.

Mental issues are the reason for most shootings, not the guns... but i know, we cant single anyone out, we my hurt their feelings... instead, lets give them meds and send them out into the world then blame everything else when they snap.

I cant speak for all Aussies of course but I imagine some have pretty much the same impression I did - about how easy it is to get them. I am relieved to hear of the background checks etc - it never made any sense you could just stop and buy like a lolly...lol

You are right, but there would not be any school shooting without guns. Now of course that's not going to happen and I don't even want that, but it just shows you. How easy it is to buy a firearm has nothing to do with how easy it is to obtain one. Many if not most shooting the perp kills themselves afterwards, so it doesn't matter how many laws they break in the process of acquiring the gun.

Which is why I am for taking assault rifles OUT OF CIRCULATION. The government should buy them back and then get rid of them. Sure, if someone really wanted to they could probably get one off the black market, but something like this would make it such a hassle to use an AR-15 that they are more likely to choose a different weapon - like a handgun - which has smaller capacity so in turn less people would die.

Maybe this is a big stretch just to reduce the number of shooting deaths by maybe 10 people per year. I'm just saying think about it. It would eventually pay off.

80 years ago that you could buy guns all over, order from a sear catalog stuff like that, but that all changed a long time ago, people just still use the same examples to make a case. Its actully very very hard to get a gun, its much easier to get them illegally, just ask Chicago... gun violence is is top in us, and they have the hardest gun laws, law abiding people cant own one legally ...
