Ya.IMO.. I've no doubt humans contribute to the messiness - sadly, that's what we do - but honestly - how many million of years of weather change/cycle patterns has the earth seen ?

I think it is pretty egotistical and arrogant that some humans shoulder the responsibility for the ways of nature - Nature is a force we will never conquer. She proves it everyday.

We just have to learn to do our part as individuals and do the righty and respect the planet. A little maintenance and nurture is a good thing.

I somewhat find it funny when folks like blue talk about how we're going to ruin the planet, or destroy the world, or it won't exist if we keep doing what we're doing.
A funny comic I once saw that I can't recall where said it best in my opinion. In it, a person labelled humanity's representative or something was talking to the earth chan meme. The guy apologized for how humanity was destroying her, to which earth laughed and replied "oh no, you might be hurting me a little, but ultimately you'll just wipe yourselves out, and I'll heal over time once you all kill yourselves. Though I won't miss you parasites honestly."

Even if humanity right now used every nuke in the world and hit as many areas as possible, that would certainly wipe out a lot of life, but I have no doubt life would still exist afterwards, and eventually thrive. Hell, earth goes through Major extinction level events periodically, and I believe scientists say based on history we're currently overdue.

We do have an effect on the world sure, but to think we will end up destroying it is arrogant at this time. Nothing we have can come close to doing so.

yeah but that's because any weapon that could destroy a planet would have to be very very powerful and it would probably take more power than there is from earth, alien could probably kill us though if they found us first

Assuming aliens exist, and they are more advanced then us, and have developed weapons. Honestly though, while a weapon that could destroy a planet sounds powerful, it's honestly overkill and a waste. Why take the time to build a laser or bomb that could blow up a planet when you could just bombard a planet with lethal gas, or chemicals and just wipe out the life?

Ultimately though, if advanced aliens do exist, I doubt they would waste time killing us or try to steal out planet. If they have the tech to reach earth in short amounts of time, they could easily find another planet that doesn't have a bunch of violent apes with nukes to live on or harvest.

Kim, the ice sheet and lack of ice sheet is a positive feedback cycle so the rate of heating is supposed to get quicker. I will use a small example:
1. Ice age ends and Kim's glacier is real big. Half on water and half on land. Sunlight reflects off the ice.
2. Temp warms slightly, Water heats up a little and melts the underside of Kim's Glacier. Sunlight reflects off ice
3. Kims glacier starts to break up over water, exposing more water to sunlight. Water warms up more increasing temps melting glacier ice. Temps getting warmer but still 3/4 of area sunlight reflected.
4. Kims glacier starting to melt quicker, now exposing land that absorbs even more solar radiation further increasing temps and melt of glacier.
5. Kims glacier is tiny now, with water, dirt and rock absorbing heat, lichen and grasses start to grow
6. Glacier gone, beautiful arctic valley full of life and forests. Blue buys a bunker fearing the planet will implode at a specified future date and time, "the sky is falling the sky is falling" he screams as he drives to the protest against gasoline consumption.
7. Years and years later...... Temps drop just so slightly, last years snow pack in the mountains didnt fully melt this summer, some sunlight starts to reflect again, temps start to get a bit cooler.......

Thats why the temps and ice loss increase quicker the more ice is lost.

Sure the Earth has seen numerous extinction events... and probably more near-extinction events too. Our problem is we are contributing to one, which is kinda dumb really. Now you can say 'meh, happened before and will happen again so why worry'. But then cars crash all the time, so would you say the same, flip on the cruise control, stick your feet on the dash and have a nap? Nope, because then you know a crash is gonna happen and is more than likely to lead to your premature death. It may not, you might run out of gas first and roll to a gentle stop amidst a cloud of fluffy cushions whilst a hot babe pours an ice-cold Bud down your throat. But life is rarely that kindly.

But its a fair bet some fool has tried it and maybe even survived it. Not a recommendation to do so yourself though, is it? Some math nerd might even prove your chances of not dying are better than even. But still not a bright idea.

Folk make a mess all over the place. True. But I doubt you want a toxic waste dump next door. But why worry when its two towns over. Not a problem. Until it is contaminating the water-table that your draw your water from. But hey, you can sue them so that's okay.

Well, we are all going to be somewhat inconvenienced in the future. And it's pretty certain some of us will survive but that don't mean you or your children or their children will be amongst that number. It don't mean those folk not inconvenienced will have anything near the lifestyle we all enjoy today. When a global population starts trying to squeeze itself into the habitable land left, it's a fair bet that they won't turn about peacefully when you wave them off your part of what's left. When what's left won't support those left on it with sufficient food, shelter, fresh water or housing, telling them it's their bad luck, it's just cycles and give it a few hundred years and it will all be fine again, now get back on your boats and go starve or drown elsewhere, that is not going to be a very convincing argument.

I should worry, I'll be dead by then and I have no kids left to worry about but its a pretty piss-poor attitude for those who do have family who will have to deal with the forthcoming mess.

yes but I think the worry is what if it doesn't and what if it kills us in the process

Oh my, there are so so many of you that I would love to say "OK Boomer" to, but I feel it would discredit any points I've made.

Danik, thank you for busting climate experts Mack and Dez's asses.

Dear Mack, Dez, Argo, and anyone else who thinks they know better than the science,

You do not have to care about the climate. You do not have to care about the future of the world. For all I know, you might be dead by the time it affects Earth. No. I don't care how much you care about the trees, forests and birds. I don't care how much you care about the turtles, the fish, and the seahorses. I don't care if you do or don't care whether polar bears are forced out of existence due to Humanity's own doings.

But I ask you to please, please, please, just like if you were a child again attending a summer camp, leave the Earth better than you found it. It would mean a lot.

The generations ahead of me have screwed things up. Screwed 'em up badly. Some take time to fix it. Some don't. But, if you want to make sure you leave a legacy, make people remember how great you were, then clean up after yourself. It's a skill that has been taught to young people from the beginning of time. You make a mess, you clean it up. Now it's your turn. Don't make my generation be the last.

Sincerely,

L.M.
