Improved trade tax

In my opinion, those holding a port should gain more from doing so, and I think that income should be linked to trade. I therefore suggest an increase in the trade tax given to the port controlling nation. I see two possible ways to do this:
A) Set the tax to 10% on all goods bought AND sold at port, paid by the game (like the current tax is).
B) Make those who buy and sell pay 10% in tax, but adjust selling and buying prices so merchants still earn the same after tax (I do not wish for merchants to suffer from this).
Alternative A is very easy to implement, and would work just like today, while alternative B has the advantages of being easy to expand in the future, for instance by letting the port controlling nation be able to adjust the tax within certain limits, and maybe it also "feels more correct".
While this would work great together with Blockades, I also believe this is a good idea even without Blockades, as I believe ports should give more income, and thus more reason to fight over port control, and also it gives people a higher incentive to trade in ports controlled by their own nation.

10% seems fair, and if CJ's quick questimate is close to accurate, this means an average income of 3mill on port sales, + roughly the same 3m on purchases. (will be a bit more).
6m increase to nation income per port per day, that's worth defending from a blockade. At the very least, a nation would not let the blockade go on more than a few days.
I fully support this idea of taxing "up to" 10% on both sales and purchases with the option for nations to set their own rates in the future (between min-max levels).

I really like this idea, as it gives a non-population related income from ports. Certain ports are more worthwhile just in how common trade occurs from there and it would add another priority to deciding what port to take.

Didn't we just reduce the tax amount on citizens from 10 to 5 because it was causing too much of an influx in gc. So we turn around and say let's increase the taxes a nation gets on trade.

I agree with you in principal on this point Dez. I think this in response to blockade upgrade concerns being voiced.
The question arises "Why defend against a blockade when the nation is only risking trade tax revenue that amounts to so little?"

We can do anything as long as we get honor points and as long as pirates/privateers can feed on innocent traders and traders should be greatful for it and rejoice for 1 honor point if by anychance they win battle.

Maybe we should have it where it's controllable by the nation that issues it with a minimum tax of 1% and a maximum tax of 10%. Also having it where the player pays that amount on top of the base cost of the resources.
Maybe it could also have an impact on the development of a port like the lower the taxes the more people a transport immigrants brings to the port or the higher the tax in a non food port causes the daily increase/ decrease of population to decline and maybe go deeper into the negatives. but maybe have it in a food port where if the tax is 10% and the larger the stock of food the higher the population grows each day. This would cause the number of crates of food and other materials to be decreased by an insane amount to even be usable/ implementable.
maybe also the blockade feature could cause the tax rate for a short time afterward to to go up to replenish the cities gold supply (this would be taken by the game) as to reverse the consequences of the blockade on the port and reimburse the city and everything else to get it back up and running.

I agree with a lot of this. I remember someone posted possibly tying population growth into port growth through several mechanisms such as trade activity, nation wealth. I think it was in the contract shipping thread at one point as well.
