I know zilch about the mechanics behind production by local population so could someone explain how there is a negative production amount?

Where are you grabbing that screenshot from?

If I were to venture a guess, plantations are producing so much that population is now consuming rather than producing...

Based on the game changelog, it shouldn't be showing a negative number. Local production only applies if the port has less than 10M crates.


1.9.210 (2019-01-22 14:59:41)

Locals Production is no longer added once per day but hourly.

Specifically, 35,000 crates of the port's production are added hourly to every port that has 10M or less crates of its own production during the daily update.


Given this. Local production should be either 0 or a multiple of 35k.
