Yes I know, the complaint from Mack is that a comma isn't needed between "brigs of war" and the word "and". I stated the rule on writing a list within a sentence. Each item is separated with a comma with the last item including the word "and' or "or" with it.

i just googled, it turns out its kind of debatable. Some say you do add it, others say you don't need to. its called an oxford comma apparently since oxford requires it. I was taught all my life that you don't add a comma before and, but apparently not everyone agrees.

Where I live, there seem to be a mix of both, but people normally don't really care about it, since it means the same thing.

Couple of things. When you are listing only two things like a pot and a pan, the comma isn't required. When listing multiple items like cups, plates, napkins, and silverware, if the comma isn't needed after napkins, why is it needed after cups and plates. When you answer that question, you will understand why the comma is placed as such. As well, a comma is place before "and" when conjoining separate independent sentences as you did with your "but".

ugh, I hate English grammar so much :D. I will say this though, I believe that unless you're writing something for school, or for your job, that perfect grammar is not necessary so long as your writings are legible and understandable.
