Ammonium carbonate. I did that during lab practicals. It doesn't rank way up there with your grossest foods but it is not nice either.

Of course, it isn't food but the question was what was the grossest thing I'd tasted so far. That is my answer - a chemical salt. Subsequently, I'm able to identify the salt on sight, taste and smell and easily razed my practical examination.

Closely following behind NH4CO3 is dilute Sodium Hydroxide. Tasted like spoilt, concentrated fermented alcoholic beverage and that was dilute NaOH. i sipped it in accidentally when using a Pippette.

Two pirates walk into a tavern.
The tavern owner, who is a futuristic scientist with all sorts of chemicals, asks them what they want.
Pirate #1: I'll have H20.
Pirate #2: I'll have H20, too.
When they drink their beverages, Pirate #2 dies. RIP...

No offense, but H2O2 itself has no taste and is not a gross food. Just for everyone's benifitment. Any smell you get from the compound is because of the substances it reacts with when in use.

But good joke Chaulbad. And old one, but good enough.

I asked the guy sitting next to me if he had any Sodium Hypobromite…
He said NaBrO

:) I've read some literature. The characters had to eat some pretty gross things. Their own excreta, raw flesh of their friends and all the cheery things of course. I didn't personally taste them but the authors were unfortunately vivid in their description most probably from personal experience or something similar enough in terms of imagination by mirror neurons.

but I misremembered oxymoron. the word I needed was redundant, oxymoron is a contradictory statement.
