Plantations are long term, as most things in this game. Doesn't make them dumb, just... long term. Like goldsmiths.

The way to go is have 30 fishing fleets stoking your warehouses and selling to plantation owners. Potato party is good too. Then also have a few plunder fleets for attacking people with irresponsibly high danger.
