Battle Mechanics Question - Who Fires First

Postby Shadowood » Thu Feb 09, 2017 10:07 pm

I recently got attacked by Plato (who gave permission to post this report). At the end of this attack you will see my cutters didn't fire a single shot.

I was always under the impression that Cutters, due to their speed, ALWAYS fire first in a battle. Is this correct or not? Is this a BUG? To squash any defense of proper stacking, 1 cutter is 60 ATT and 1 is 54 ATT. They should have fired first if this is how the game is designed. Thoughts?

Also, check the detailed battle report. The front page is sometimes wrong.

Plato confirmed 1 Favorable Wind is on him now. That shouldn't be enough to over come a maxed cutter though. Should it?

I think there's a random element included. Now, everything related to combat is seemingly deliberately kept secret, but I (and many others) at least know the speed parameter of every ships type. And how the various attributes affect it. Some place it's said that the ship with the highest speed fires first. I think that is not exactly correct. I think the ships use their speed plus a die roll to determine initiative. Thus, it is possible for the slower ship to fire first - with a lot of luck. The difference between the speed of a SoL with favorable winds and a cutter should not be too large for this to ever happen.

There must be a "Dice Roll" to see who goes first. Looked back at the whole battle, in the first round my FRIGATE went first.

And would also explain the verbiage on the voodoo card "Bless"

Which then begs the question on "Drums of War". Is there an element we are not aware of. Does this effect the "Hull" like "Iron Scantling" or is it a whole other hidden element we don't get to see?

Just found this in the Help Index, under "Ships Upgrade"

Code: Select all
Upgrades matter during battles.

The most important is the ship level. Level affects ship hit points and also how hard each cannon shoots.

For each cannon shoot, upgrades interfere that decide where a cannon fire was successful or not.

Note that the max number of cannons each ship can fire in one round, is the (cannon it carries) / 2.

To determine if a cannon shot successfully landed, we first have the attacker ship which has an attack roll. Attack roll is determined by bronze cannon, double hammocks, crew and some luck.
In response, the ship that is about to receive the attack, rolls an armor class which is determined by copper plating, cotton sails, ship speed and some luck.

Who fires first is decided by the ship speed.

Ship Speed is a measurement of basic speed data plus cotton sails upgrade.
Every ship starts with 5 attribute points. You gain 3 to 5 more for each level upgrade.

I want to call attention to the line that states specifically "Who fires first is decided by the ship speed."

Code: Select all
Base Ship Speed = Base Ship Speed + ( Base Ship Speed * 3 * Cotton Sails / 100 )
Ship speed = Base Ship Speed * ((Current Crew / Max Crew) + 1) / 2
Final Ship Speed = Ship Speed + (Ship Speed * Double Hammocks / 100)

Howker Base Ship Speed is confirmed at 21. I need to know the rest. LOL. Anyone? Anyone?
